The New England Revolution have already had three first-team defenders leave the team this off-season, can there really be a fourth? On Monday a report out of Cyprus claimed that Alexander Buttner could be on his way to APOEL FC. APOEL plays in the first tier Cypriot First Division and has 28 league titles.
Buttner was signed using Targeted Allocation Money by the Revolution last November and currently occupies an International Roster spot. This past season the 31-year-old appeared in 17 matches, starting 15 of them. Buttner missed time in the post-season due to COVID-19 with DeJuan Jones earning the starting job in his absence.
Prior to coming to the Revolution the Dutchman spent time in the Premier League with Manchester United.
New England on Monday confirmed that they had acquired Christian Mafla who will occupy an International Roster spot. Moving on from Buttner would create a need to bolster the back-line even further, however. This off-season the Revs have already moved on from Seth Sinovic, Michael Mancienne, and Antonio Delamea. It is hard to envision them moving on from Buttner and not making another corresponding move.
New England could certainly use the extra international roster spot back and the cash to go out and bring in additional players to support other areas of need like the midfield.
More to come on this as nothing has been confirmed as of yet in terms of this report.
