The Boston Cannons are adding hardware to their trophy case. On Wednesday Major League Lacrosse announced that Cannons head coach Sean Quirk was the New Balance Coach of the Year. Voting was determined by a vote conducted by the league’s coaches.
“I am so honored to have been selected as MLL’s 2020 Coach of the Year,” said Coach Quirk. “I have so much respect for all the coaches in this league. Each team presented us with intense competition and some great lacrosse. Our goal from day one was to bring the trophy back to Boston for Cannons fans and I could not be more proud of this team for all they’ve accomplished through all of the adversity this season.”
Quirk coached the fourth seed Cannons to the 2020 Major League Lacrosse Championship in which they defeated the number one seed Denver Outlaws 13-10.
“We are all extremely grateful for all that Coach Quirk does for us,” said Cannons captain Nick Marrocco. “His loyalty and belief in this team is what drives us to be our very best and ultimately led us to win the 2020 championship! He is a true leader in every sense of the word and has transformed this Boston team in the past few years. I have learned so much from him along the way. He’s truly earned all of the recognition he receives. An inspiration to all of us…and a champion!”
Prior to the 2020 MLL season Quirk made a number of masterful trades that helped lay the groundwork for what was Boston’s first championship since 2011.
The rest of the awards are expected to be announced by MLL in the coming days which will likely include a few other members of the 2020 Boston Cannons.
