On Sunday night ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a bomb on the NFL with a report on the New England Patriots. According to Schefter and Chris Mortensen, the Patriots have signed free agent QB Cam Newton to a one-year contract.
According to the report, the deal is heavily incentive-laden for the former NFL MVP. With the signing of Newton, the Patriots QB room has Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer, Brian Lewerke, and J’Mar Smith.
Last season the long-time Carolina Panther QB started just two games with an 0-2 record, a 56.2% completion percentage, and had no touchdowns but threw an interception. In his career, Newton owns a 68-55-1 record in 124 starts and is still just 31 years old. In 2015 Newton won the NFL MVP owning a 15-1 record and throwing 35 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. In addition, he rushed for 10 touchdowns in 2015.
Newton instantly becomes the most experience QB on the Patriots roster with Hoyer starting just 38 games in his NFL career and owns a 16-22 record.
New England last season had Tom Brady under center. Brady had a 12-4 record with a 60.8 completion percentage while throwing 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions and have 4,057 passing yards.
