UConn Added Back Into BIG EAST, PC’s Road Gets Harder

UConn Added Back Into BIG EAST, Providence College’s Road Gets Harder But Adds In Another Layer Of Competition

On Thursday the BIG EAST announced in a press conference at Madison Square Garden that the UConn Huskies were rejoining the conference.

Of course this means the road for the local BIG EAST program, the Providence College Friars, has gotten a little tougher with the pedigree of UConn basketball being immense.

UConn had left the BIG EAST earlier this decade after a conference shakeup but it’s return should make things more interesting for PC Men’s Basketball.

“The addition of UConn men’s basketball program will strengthen our league,” said PC Head Coach Ed Cooley on Thursday. “Anytime you can add a program that has won four national titles since 1999 it’s going to bring a lot of benefits.”

As for the PC Athletics department as a whole the move is believed to bring more national recognition to the conference and raise the competitiveness amongst the teams.

“This is an exciting time fo the BIG EAST Conference,” said Head of PC Athletics Bob Driscoll. “The ability to add this prestigious New England institution to the BIG EAST will increase our league’s profile on the national level.”

With the move this is what the Huskies who left for the ACC earlier this decade had to say on their Twitter.

“We’re coming home!”

Providence College Friars Overcome URI With Freshman A.J. Reeves Stepping Up To Give PC Bragging Rights

The battle for the state of Rhode Island basketball started a new chapter today with the Providence College Friars defeating the University of Rhode Island Rams at the Dunk with a 59-50 win.

Every year the two teams face off against each other with the winner coming away with bragging rights until they meet again. Last season at the Ryan Center the Rams defeated PC, but this year Coach Ed Cooley and his Friars got the revenge they were seeking.

Typically in college basketball the player turnover year-to-year is rather large giving the rivalry a new look each and every year. But this time around it was very different for URI with the departure of Coach Dan Hurley who departed to UCONN after last season and Assistant Coach David Cox took over at the helm.

For PC this was a different look for them as well, Coach Cooley and his very young Friars team relied on several freshman to help pick up the slack of the key departures. For PC it was players like Freshman AJ Reeves who stepped up against the Rams with Reeves scoring a team high 15 points.

Behind Reeves it was Isaiah Jackson scoring 13 points and 9 rebounds also providing the Friars a much needed lift over Rhode Island. Prior to the game if it was noted that Alpha Diallo would only score 5 points many would have likely called a Friars loss. But the Junior who has taken a leadership role this season stepped up in other ways by recording 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

With the win the Friars move to 6-2 on the season and are now on a 3 game winning streak.

Next up for the Friars is a matchup with the Boston College Eagles this Tuesday on Chestnut Hill.

Providence College Friars Headed To Big East Finals After Miracle Comeback

Published

The Providence College Friars are headed to the Big East Finals after they overcame a 17 point deficit to defeat Xavier on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

Kyron Cartwright was the hero here for the Friars scoring 15 pts with many of them coming late in this overtime thriller pushing Ed Cooley’s team into a title game against either Butler or Villanova.

After the Friars terribly inconsistent regular season the team is getting hot at exactly the right time thanks to excellent coaching from Cooley.

The Big East Title game will take place on Saturday at MSG.

Of course, PC wasn’t the only Rhode Island team playing in a big game on Friday. The Univerisity of Rhode Island Rhody Rams team were also victors taking down the VCU Rams to a final score of 76-67 to advance to the Atlantic 10 conference semifinals.

Going to be interesting to see where these two teams land come NCAA Tourney time.
