Boston Bruins Could Lose Key Guys In The Upcoming Expansion Draft
Who Should The Bruins Protect In The Expansion Draft
The NHL Expansion Draft is just about a month away, as it will be held on June 21st. Before the Vegas Golden Knights are able to pick their players, there are some rules that everyone needs to follow.
The Rules For Protecting Players:
There are two options for protection:
- Seven Forwards, Three Defensemen and one goalie
- Eight Skaters (Forward/Defensemen) and one goaltender
Also all players who have a “No Movement” clause automatically have to be protected in the draft. Then all first and second-year pros, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection.
Player Exposure Requirements
All teams must meet certain minimum requirements in regards to the players that can be exposed for selection.
- One defensemen who is a) under contract in 2017-18, b) played in 40 games or more NHL the prior or played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons
- Two forwards, same rule apply from above
- One goalie who is under contract in 17-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the exasperation of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the team elects to make a restricted free agent goalie available in order to meet this requirement, that goalie must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club’s protected list
Players with a potential career-ending injury or have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games may not fall under the requirements and are exempt. Vegas will make their picks by 5 pm ET on the 20th and the results will be revealed on the 21st.
Who Vegas Can Pick
- Las Vegas must select one player from each team. 30 players in total.
- Vegas must pick 14 forwards, nine defensemen, and three goalies.
- 20 of those players have to be under contract for the 2017-18 season.
- The team cannot buyout any of the players selected in the Draft earlier than the summer following their first season.
All Teams must have their list of protected players submitted by 5:00 pm ET on Saturday, June 17, 2017.
What Should The Bruins Do
The Bruins will most likely go with option A and protect 7 forwards, three defensemen and 1 goalie.
Seven forwards:
- David Krejci “NMC”
- Patrice Bergeron “NMC”
- David Backes “NMC”
- David Pastrnak, he is a great young star that has shown that he could be a top goal scrorer very soon
- Brad Marchand, he is under contract until 2025 and is you top goal scorer
- Tim Schaller, A solid players that can play wing or his natural center.
- Riley Nash, a great 4th line guy that still brings a lot of skill to the game
Three Defensemen:
- Zdeno Chara “NMC”
- Colin Miller, a young kid with a bunch of upside as he continue to develop
- Torey Krug, A great guy to run the PP through and also a solid d-man.
One Goalie:
Up For Grabs:
Forwards:
The most likely guys that Vegas would take would be Matt Beleskey, Jimmy Hayes, or possibly Ryan Spooner but Spooner is a RFA this year so they might stay away from him.
Defensemen:
Adam McQuaid or Kevin Miller would be the logical pick if the Knights wanted a defensemen.
Goalies:
Malcolm Subban who has been rumored to be wanted by Vegas and then Anton Khudobin.
Boston Bruins Want To Sign David Pastrnak Long-Term According To Team Ownership
The David Pastrnak news continues to swirl around. On Monday we had the ex-NHL gm throwing out a trade rumor, on Tuesday Don Sweeney shot it down. And now on Wednesday, Boston Bruins owner Charlie Jacobs declares the team wants a long-term contract extension.
“There certainly was no intention to trade David,” Jacobs said during an in-studio visit to Fenway Park as part of the 2017 WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon. “Our intent is to sign David to a long-term extension.”
As for the Brian Lawton rumor, Jacobs wants to know who his source is.
“I think by virtue of it being the middle of August, some of the writers may feel compelled and come up with something interesting to sell a paper perhaps,” Jacobs offered, “I wanted to ask Brian Lawton who his source was, but I’m not sure he’d give it up.”
Jacobs said there has been no discussions with other teams regarding a Pastrnak trade and continue to publicly state they want a long-term deal.
“We certainly haven’t had any discussions with any other teams about trading David,” Jacobs said. “The only discussions that we’ve had are between David and David’s agent, and frankly conveying just what I shared with you, that our intention is to sign him to a long-term deal.
As for term, the Boston Bruins are thinking 6+ years.
“When I say long term, six or more years, that’s on our radar.”
As for my opinion. I believe the team is still trying to knock out a long-term contract with the young forward. There isn’t alot of trades I would consider. If you move on from him for a forward, that wouldn’t make sense. If you could land a young top of the league defensemen, then I am listening.
A player like Drew Doughty who is in the prime of his career would be a trade I would entertain if I was the Bruins. But I am not sure that type of yield will be out there for Pastrnak. I think one of the biggest issues right now is Pastrnak is asking for an much higher value than the Bruins are comfortable with.
I continue to expect a deal to be signed, sealed, and delivered right at the start of training camp next month.
Boston Bruins Talk: Sweeney Confirms No Pastrnak Trade, Broadcast Shakeup
Despite the NHL season being over a month away, there has been a lot of Boston Bruins chatter going on this Tuesday.
On Monday an ex-NHL GM hinted on Twitter that the Bruins might trade restricted free agent forward David Pastrnak. In an email to the Boston Globe, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney strongly denied the rumor with no Pastrnak trade even being considered.
On Pastrnak’s side of things, his agent J.P. Barry believes the dialogue between the two sides has been excellent.
“We will continue to negotiate — we still have lots of time,” Barry said to the Globe. “David prefers to sign a longer term deal with the Bruins.. The negotiations between myself and Don have been very open and both sides understand each other’s positions. Hopefully we can agree on an overall structure that is amenable to both sides in the next month.”
It is worth noting that the Bruins have had a fair amount of dealing with Barry who represents former Boston Bruins players Loui Eriksson and Dougie Hamilton. As I stated yesterday, a potential deal with Pastrnak should be signed around training camp.
Shakeup On The Boston Bruins Broadcasts
On Monday afternoon, NESN announced the hiring of Alex Kraemer as the team’s new rinkside reporter. The previous rinkside reporter, Sarah Nicole Davis, left the network earlier this season after being in the role since 2014.
Kraemer has served as an in-stadium host for the New York City FC of MLS. But don’t worry Boston Bruins fans, she has NHL experience as well. Kraemer has worked as an in-arena host for the Philadelphia Flyers for the past two seasons.
The NESN change-up isn’t the only major broadcast news though for the Boston Bruins. The other news is a shakeup on the radio side of things. Long-time play-by-play man, Dave Goucher of 98.5 The Sports Hub is moving on after 17 years having called Bruins games since 2000.
Goucher’s most memorable call for many is his 2011 Stanley Cup call where he said “Cue the duck boats” celebrating the clubs first championship since 1972.

In different new, Trifecta Network announced the name for it’s new Boston Bruins show. It will be called The 7th Floor and will launch sometime next week.
Boston Bruins Talk: Former NHL GM Says Pastrnak Could Be Traded
The Boston Bruins have yet to resign restricted free agent forward David Pastrnak. This unsigned player has caused quite the stir in the Boston hockey community. Many have speculated the sides are very far apart.
But on Monday a former NHL GM and current NHL Network analyst Brian Lawton suggested on Twitter that the Bruins could be trading Pastrnak due to their current contract issues with the 21-year-old forward.
The analyst also happened to misspell Pastrnak, so there’s that too.
But in all honesty, Lawton isn’t tapped into the Boston Bruins hockey scene. In reality he isn’t that tapped into the NHL in general. But there is of course a real possibility that Pastrnak is traded.

The young forward notched 34 goals last season and should be commanding top dollar. The Bruins have $10 million in cap space to play with, plenty to get a deal with Pastrnak done. Nothing to this point suggests the two sides are having issues communicating and no one has suggested a trade is immanent.
The Boston Bruins had Pastrnak represent them on their China trip last month, nothing seemed wrong with the two sides during its duration. Twitter accounts can literally Tweet out anything. While this is a possibility, it doesn’t seem likely at the moment.
Look for a Pastrnak deal to be done right around the opening of training camp.
