On a 7 pm NESN broadcast the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox announced that their new nickname for the 2021 season will be the WooSox. The ballclub’s official name will be the Worcester Red Sox once they move into Polar Park in Spring of 2021.
Over 1000 people submitted names for the team with 218 unique submissions recorded.
“How can you beat the WooSox,” the promotional video during the broadcast asked viewers when the nickname was revealed.
Some of the other suggested nicknames for the team were the Defectors, Gritty Kitties, the Hot Weiners , Massholes, Osos Polares, and the PawSox. However ironic some of those suggestions are my favorite is Polar Express.
In addition to the nickname the team revealed what the official logo will be for the ballclub.
The logo has a lot of deeper meaning according to the team’s President Dr.Charles Steinberg.
“The name may be anticlimactic but the logo has an awful lot of Worcester in it,” said Steinberg.
The W on the bat is from the 1880 Worcesters, the swing matching the likes of David Ortiz and Ted Williams, and the smile as a tip of the cap to the original smiley fave and the “Heart of the Commonwealth”. Personally, its a tad odd for a logo but it is a bit unique.
According to the team they have already sold 1,200 season tickets to businesses and fans in the first three months of sales.
