Pawtucket Red Sox Roster Opening Day Projections Final, Michael Chavis Misses Cut

Published

on

Certainly, a lot to get to here in the final Pawtucket Red Sox projections ahead of Friday’s home opener. A flurry of unexpected moves happened within the last week with Brandon Workman being sent to Pawtucket and Marcus Walden and Bobby Poyner breaking in the season with the big league club.

Other moves such as Austin Maddox to the 10-day-dl and Fernando Rodrguez being in AA-Portland to start the year were also minor storylines for Kevin Boles’s pitching staff.

As for the lineup, the big storyline was the releasing of Steve Selskey which has yet to become official. In fact, the official roster for the PawSox has a number of missing players including Jesse Quiroz and Dan Butler who have yet to be added to the roster and technically Selskey is still listed.

As for players that missed the PawSox roster the more notable one is prospect Michael Chavis who will start the season in Portland and another is hyper utility player Chad De Le Guerra who will also be in Portland to start.

We should have a better idea on depth charts once we meet with Boles and company for PawSox media night on Wednesday ahead of the opener.

Pitchers

  1. Andy Ferguson (Starter)
  2. Justin Haley (2.66 ERA in 44 innings for Pawtucket in 7 starts, came over from Twins as part of rule 5 draft in 2017, Starter)
  3. Tommy Layne (Back after spending parts of 2016 and all of 2017 with the New York Yankees, bullpen depth for Boston)
  4. Kyle Martin
  5. Jalen Beeks (Starter)
  6. Ty Buttrey  (Kevin Boles views Buttrey as a future closer)
  7. Austin Maddox (10-Day-DL)
  8. Williams Jerez
  9. Chandler Shepherd
  10. Brandon Workman (Suprise Sent Down)
  11. Robby Scott (Might be in Boston since the Red Sox do not have any other real left-handed option out of their own bullpen)
  12. Roenis Elias (Might be used in Boston’s bullpen later on in the season, but in Pawtucket a likely starter.)

Catchers

  1. Dan Butler (Not yet on the official team roster, odd)
  2. Mike Ohlman (Traded to Boston from Texas, .216 average with 12 home runs in 2017)
  3. Oscar Hernandez *Suspended
  4. Jake Romanski* Suspended

Infield

  1. Mike Miller
  2. Jantzen Witte
  3. Tzu-Wei Lin
  4. Sam Travis (Needs a breakout season)
  5. Iván De Jesus Jr.(.242 MLB average with 495 career at-bats, most recently with the Reds. Originally played for Boston back in 2012 when he came over in the Dodger trade. Played for the Pawsox in 2012 and 2014 for a very limited time)
  6. Jesus Quiroz (Comes over from Mexican league, batted .293 in 436 games, hyper utility player)

Outfield

  1. Jeremy Barfield (Potential to replace Bryce Brentz as a power option for Kevin Boles)
  2. Rusney Castillo
  3. Aneury Tavarez
  4. Luke Tendler

Pawtucket Red Sox Will Have Drew Pomeranz On The Mound Rehabbing Sunday

Drew Pomeranz

There were a few reports out of Boston pointing towards the fact that Boston Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz would be rehabbing in Pawtucket on Sunday. But now this news has become official.

Per the Pawtucket Red Sox Pomeranz will be on the mound Sunday in McCoy Stadium rehabbing in what is Pawtucket’s second game of the season. According to Boston manager Alex Cora the plan for Pomeranz is to go 5 or 6 innings and then take it from there going forward.

Pomeranz is right on track for his middle of April return. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list by Boston with a flexor strain in his left forearm.

For baseball fans in the Rhode Island area it should be a great day at the ballpark to watch a major league pitcher work in what is an actual start for Pomeranz in terms of length.

Trifecta Sports will be at Pomeranz’s rehab start and will have play-by-play coverage including Tweets, video of his rehab, post-game interviews with Drew Pomeranz and PawSox manager Kevin Boles to gauge how the rehabbing lefty feels and what the next steps are.
