Worcester Red Sox? WooSox? Or something completely different?
On Monday Boston’s Triple-A franchise will announce it’s official team name that will change once the team moves from it’s long-time home in Pawtucket Rhode Island to Worcester, Massachusetts.
The name change will be announced on a NESN broadcast for some reason at 7 pm at the Mercantile Center located in Worcester. NESN is the home of Red Sox baseball but seems a little old school.
The Triple-A team’s current name is the Pawtucket Red Sox and are known widely as the PawSox.
Once the team announced that a move to Worcester and a project valued at well over $100 million the nickname of WooSox was immediately tagged by fans. So the question is will the franchise surprise people with something completely.
From a business perspective not naming yourself the Worcester Red Sox would appear odd on paper. The Red Sox name is a billion dollar brand with name recognition. In terms of individuality and uniqueness to move merchandise the crutch of using WooSox as a nickname will do the trick.
