Patriots Talk: Belichick Talks Brady’s Workout Plan And If It Translates To Other Players

At New England Patriots training camp on Wednesday Head Coach Bill Belichick was asked about Tom Brady’s workout plan and dieting.

When asked if Brady’s plan promotes career longevity, he deferred to the Patriots QB.

You’d have to ask him that question.

Coach Belichick was also asked if he would recommend Brady’s diet and workout plan to other players on his team. In this answer, the coach talked more to tailoring plans to each individual player instead of one blanket plan for the whole squad.

Well, we tailor everything we do to each individual, so we train players that are 185 pounds, we train players that are 350 pounds. We train players that have a lot of different things they do on the football field. Some are very specific, like specialists, like quarterbacks, kickers, snappers, things like that. Some players have a very extensive role – special teams, offense or defense, first, second, third downs – so we have different training programs. And again, each individual is different – their age, their physical makeup, their build and their strength and explosion and power and so forth.

You know, we have a certain general way of training everybody, but it really becomes pretty specific depending on the individual and what we ask them to do. So, we don’t want to train a player to do something that we’re not going to ask them to do. Unless it’s just part of the general training, we want to train players to do things that fall in line with what we would see them and ask them to perform on the field. So, depending on what the player is, then probably his age, his experience, his physical makeup, other medical issues, if there are any, his role and so forth all is part of what we look at for each individual player.

So, what’s right for one person isn’t necessarily right for the next person. Not saying it’s wrong, but maybe there’s something better we can do for the other person.

Coach Belichick’s idea of tailoring each plan to the individual is a smart one. Different players at different positions have different bodies that need different levels or types of dieting or workout regimens.

Patriots Still Led By Brady, Long Way To Go

The Patriots had a 36-33 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday. This win brings their season record to 2-1 as they narrowly defeated Houston and their rookie QB Deshaun Watson. New England was once again and for the millionth time by future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady.

Brady who is now 40-years-old had what might have been his greatest game by dropping 5 touchdowns on the Houston defense and truly carried his team to the victory. Brady threw the ball all over the field and saw repeated connections with tight end Rob Gronkowski and wideout Brandin Cooks. Cooks, of course, recorded his first and second touchdown as a member of the Patriots.

Cooks’ second touchdown catch was on the game-winning drive with fantastic footwork and body control to reel in a pitch-perfect pass from Brady. Brady was phenomenal and showed he remains clutch. But the Patriots issue is still the same. Their defense couldn’t make needed stops and got torched by Watson.

To Watson’s credit though he made some really nice throws and was able to move Patriots defenders around to find his open man. Watson scrambled for much of the game as well and showed flashes eerily similar to Brett Farve with the run and gun moving the ball for Houston.

Watson picked apart the defense and part of that could have been the preparation of Bill O’Brien and the staff on that sideline who have seen the Patriots defense a lot over the years and also watched the last 10 years of film related to New England facing rookie QBs. But still, the Patriots defense has a long way to go to get back to a championship caliber level.

Brady is 40, at some point, the defense will need to win them a game and make key stops. Brady cannot come back every single time. Historically he has done very well in those situations. But betting on it happening consistently is foolish. New England’s defense in my mind will come around late very much like the 2015 team that won the Super Bowl.

In this scenario, Stephon Gilmore is Darrelle Revis. Revis was used in zone coverage to start that season and then as he acclimated to the system was played man-on-man which is what has made him a hall of fame cornerback. Gilmore to this point has played primarily zone and is a man-on-man corner like Revis. For that reason like a fine wine, I believe the Patriots defense will age well as the season continues to progress.

Patriots Win in Spectacular Fashion against the Texans 36-33

It was late in the 4th Quarter with a little more than 2 Minutes left on the clock.  The Patriots were down by 5 and needed a TD badly.  No worries this is Tom Brady territory!  Tommy had the ball and that is all you needed hope in.  He was all set for his 50th 4th Quarter comeback.  Yes that’s right, I said his 50th comeback.

TB12 is notorious for his comebacks as we can look at the Super Bowl as a clear example.  He is just automatic!  This is a guy who refuses to lose.  This is a guy who will throw the ball to the end zone for a needed TD.  And you know what it works!  I don’t know how he does it, I mean really, this guy is just incredible.  He works like magic in the 4th Quarter.  And if he has the ball with 2 Minutes left, you best be on your guard.

What happened before all this was patriots football as usual.  A TD to Rob Gronkowski, 2 TDs to Chris Hogan, and a TD to Brandon Cooks.  It looked like it would come down to the team that scored last.  And I have to tell you I had my doubts when the Houston Texans scored a late Field Goal to make it [33-28].  I mean how do you comeback from being down by 5 late in the 4th Quarter.  I know that the team’s offense looked a bit stagnated with their last possessions.  It didn’t look good.

But you know nothing looks good until the end of a comeback and TB12 was not about to lose.  He got down the field with help from Gronk, Amandola, Hogan, and Cooks.  Then near the Red Zone with 30 something left on the clock he threw it to Cooks for the TD.  It was a spectacular catch!  Cooks toe tapped his way in the end zone and controlled the ball all the way to the ground.  Wow, what a great catch!  And just when they needed it too.

The Pats weren’t done there, they wanted to make sure that they had it in the bag.  [34-33] wasn’t good enough.  What they needed was to take the Texans out of the game with 20 something seconds on the clock.  They went for a 2 point conversion and got it with a Brady-Cooks hookup on the far side of the end zone [36-33].  It was the proverbial nail in the coffin!

TB12 showed us just why he is legendary today, he is the GOAT.  Give him 2 Minutes and he’ll win the game!  He had done it 49 times before this one and I’d have to say that this one was just as memorable as the others.  It just was unbelievable.  I wasn’t sure he had, another one, in him.  But you just can’t doubt him.  He knows the 2 Minute drill inside and out.  He knows his receivers inside and out.  He knows the play calls inside and out.  This was just another reason to love Tom Brady.  His comebacks are simply timeless.  Here’s to 4th Quarter comeback number 50!

The Patriots next game will be against Carolina at Foxboro, Sunday at 1pm on Fox.  Look for them to be doing football as usually going into the week.  I’m expecting Gronk, Amandola, Hogan, and Cooks to have big games.  Hogan and Cooks had a huge game today.  Now that they have those Big Game jitters out of their system, expect them to ride high into next game.

Patriots Talk: Robert Kraft Releases Public Statement Regarding Trump’s Remarks

Many critics of Donald Trump have been making news as soon as he won the 2016 Presidential elections. The current President has been a huge wave of controversy throughout the time he took office in January, he has made many remarks that have stirred a lot of people. (including his supporters like Robert Kraft) Last Friday, Donald Trump made his thoughts known about NFL players who kneel during the national anthem should fired. Donald Trump tweeted his latest thoughts today that NFL attendance was lower due to the players ‘disrespecting our Flag & Country.’

Robert Kraft, among many NFL owners, made his response that was ‘deeply disappointed’ with the President’s latest remarks. Kraft, a  long-time friend and supporter of Trump, released his public statement shortly after the story broke.

“I am deeply disappointed by the tone of the comments made by the President on Friday. I am proud to be associated with so many players who make such tremendous contributions in positively impacting our communities. Their efforts, both on and off the field, help bring people together and make our community stronger. There is no greater unifier in this country than sports, and unfortunately, nothing more divisive than politics. I think our political leaders could learn a lot from the lessons of teamwork and the importance of working together toward a common goal. Our players are intelligent, thoughtful and care deeply about our community and I support their right to peacefully affect social change and raise awareness in a manner that they feel is most impactful.”

Today though, he focus will be on the Patriots who will be hosting the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. Kickoff will be at 1:00 PM EST and will be hosted by CBS.
