Red Sox Recall Marcus Walden From AAA Pawtucket, Poyner To DL

On April 8th, the Red Sox sent RHP Marcus Walden down to AAA Pawtucket to make room for Eduardo Rodriguez on the 25 man roster. Well Marcus Walden is now being recalled to join the major league roster on an emergency basis. Normally when a player is being sent down to the minor leagues, he can only be recalled on an emergency basis if a player is put on the disabled list.

Bobby Poyner is that player who is being put on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Last night, he didn’t seem to be his sharpest. In 2 innings of work, he gave up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout on 37 pitches (25 strikes).

With Poyner being put on the disabled list, it would be the assumption that Brian Johnson will be the Red Sox left handed option out of the bullpen. That would mean when Drew Pomeranz is activated off of the disabled list, Hector Velazquez would be sent down to AAA.

Marcus Walden pitched well for the Red Sox during his first stint with the team. In 3 appearances, he went 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and striking out 3 batters. Since he was sent down to AAA Pawtucket, he has not made an appearance. He was however supposed to be the starting pitcher late this afternoon for the Paw Sox as they take on the Toledo Mud Hens at 4:05 pm in Toledo.

Evan graduated from Bryant University in May 2017. He originally joined Trifecta Network back in February 2016. Currently, he covers the Pawtucket Red Sox for Trifecta along with appearing as a guest on Trifecta Networks podcasts.

Paw Sox Drop Finale In Columbus 2-0 Even With Great Outing From Haley

The Paw Sox played their finale with the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday night with the chance to sweep the three-game series.

Unfortunately, the Paw Sox lost this game 2-0, even though Paw Sox starting pitcher Justin Haley had his best start on the young season. The Paw Sox did out hit the Clippers 5-4 on the night, with both Sam Travis and Jantzen Witte had 2 hits each on the night.

Pitching The Story Of The Night

The Paw Sox and Clippers exchanged 0’s for five and a half innings tonight. With Justin Haley dealing for the Paw Sox, he It wasn’t until the bottom of the 6th inning when the Clippers pushed across the first run of the game. That was thanks to Yu Chang hitting a sacrifice fly to Rusney Castillo in center field to bring in Mike Papi to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead.

Then in the 7th inning, the Clippers got their insurance run thanks to a Richie Shaffer single to right field to drive in Eric Haase to make it a 2-0 lead for the Clippers. After that single by Haase, Kevin Boles pulled Haley for Ty Buttrey. Haley’s final line pitching line on the night was 6 1/3 innings pitched, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts on 96 pitches (64 strikes).

Boston Red Sox Starter Steven Wright To Rehab In Triple-A Pawtucket On Friday As He Works His Way Back From Injury.

The Boston Red Sox have announced that injured starting pitcher Steven Wright will rehab with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox this Friday.

Pawtucket will be at home in the friendly confines of McCoy Stadium for Wright’s rehab start with the returning from their road trip on Thursday afternoon from Columbus.

The PawSox had Dedgar Jimenez originally slated for Friday night but the assumption is now with Wright rehabbing everyone else in the rotation will be pushed back one day.

Before going to the Major Leagues, the knuckleballer pitched for Pawtucket for three seasons with his most recent stint being in 2015 prior to his breakout 2016 campaign. In 2015 for the PawSox Wright started 8 games going 2-5 with a 1.81 ERA in 52 innings pitched.

His only full season in Pawtucket was back in 2014 where he threw 95 innings with a 3.41 ERA in 15 starts. Wright has had his fair share of major league success since leaving the PawSox including the 2016 campaign where he made the American League All-Star team and was considered a Cy Young candidate for the first half the season.

All in all, Wright has a 3.97 ERA in 287.2 big league innings pitched with a 21-14 record in 40 career starts including 4 complete games.

Once Wright does complete his rehab assignment he will serve a 15 game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball for violating the league’s domestic violence policy this past offseason. Wright found himself on the 10-day dl back on March 26th after undergoing a cartilage restoration procedure.

Steven Wright and the PawSox will take on the Gwinnett Stripers at 7:05 pm.

Paw Sox Beat Clippers Behind Big Game From Catcher Dan Butler

The Paw Sox played their second game of their three game series with the Columbus Clippers tonight in Columbus. With starting pitcher Chandler Shepherd only going 3 2/3 innings, the bullpen came up big with 5 1/3 innings of one hit ball as the Paw Sox went on to win this game 4-3. But the real star of the night was catcher Dan Butler who went 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.

Paw Sox Pitching

Chandler Shepherd didn’t last long in this game going only 3 2/3 innings. In those 3 2/3 innings, he gave up 8 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 1 walk, and had 5 strikeouts on 86 pitches (53 strikes). After that, the bullpen shut it down. It began with Roenis Elias coming in to go 2 1/3 innings, while striking out 3 on 22 pitches (16 strikes). He did not allow a base runner.

After that, Paw Sox manager Kevin Boles brought in Brandon Workman into the game. This was his second appearance since his implosion last Wednesday against the Buffalo Bisons. Workman pitched very will tonight in 2 innings of work. In those two innings, he struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced. He did this on 29 pitches (17 strikes). This was the second consecutive outing he has had where he went 29 pitches. Earlier this season manager Kevin Boles said that they are trying to extend Workman and try to get him up to 50 pitches. Right now, he is at about 30 pitches but you could easily see him go up to about 35-40 pitches in his next outing.

Paw Sox Offense

Paw Sox got on the board early in this game in the 2nd inning. It began when Dan Butler hit a double to drive in two runs. Then Rusney Castillo hit a single to drive in Butler. This gave the Paw Sox a 3-0 early lead. However, after 3 innings, the Paw Sox with the Clippers at 3.

But in the fourth inning, the Paw Sox took the 4-3 lead for good when he hit a soft liner to center field to drive in Dan Butler.

The Paw Sox will look for the sweep on Wednesday night as the Paw Sox send Justin Haley (0-1, 4.70 ERA) to the mound up against Adam Plutko (1-1, 3.00 ERA) for the Clippers. The game will start at 6:35 pm in Columbus. After that, the Paw Sox will come home to play the Gwinnett Strippers for 3 games.
