The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) kicks off its 2020 NWSL Fall Series on Saturday, September 5th with the Washington Spirit taking on Sky Blue FC. This series will be taking part in home markets and marks the first time the league has played in their home venues since the 2019 season.
For the NWSL this Fall Series follows up a very successful 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup that they hosted in a bubble in Salt Lake City during the Summer.
“I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to put together a schedule that gets our players back out on the pitch and showcases their talent for a global audience, while limiting travel as much as possible and keeping player and staff health and safety our top priority,” said NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird. “I want to thank our players, club staff and our entire ownership group for their collaboration and continued flexibility as we navigate this unique moment in time. I can’t wait to watch this fall series unfold.”
The league will kick off at Segra Field with the broadcast being carried on CBS and CBS All Access. Each week will feature a CBS match and then in October, there will be three matches on CBS Sports Network.
This will be a big test for the NWSL not only from a logistical standpoint but also from a quality of play perspective. In recent months there has been a departure of star talent in favor of the FA Women’s Super League in England which has not only locked up a deal with NBC in the United States but has brought in USWNT players like Sam Mewis and Rose Lavalle and other NWSL stars like England’s own Rachel Daly. Still, plenty of talent left in the NWSL but things will look a tad different on the pitch.
