Last season the New England Revolution didn’t win their first road match till the end of the season but this year? Well, that is a completely different story.
In their second road match of the year, the Revs came away with a win with a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on the road.
New England’s first goal came via forward Teal Bunbury who scored in the 15th minute and their second goal came via the under-the-radar signing in Cristian Penilla who provided a much-needed cushion for the Revs defense.
In addition to his 71st-minute goal, Penilla recorded an assist which leaves him only one assist behind league leader Diego Rossi of LAFC for the league lead in assists. While we are on the topic of newcomers, midfielder Luis Caicedo who joined the Revs just days prior to last weeks match was able to start for the Revs against Houston. Caicedo in his first MLS start played all 90 minutes for HC Brad Friedel and recorded his first MLS assist with a secondary assist on the Bunbury goal.
As for net-minder Matt Turner he recorded a career-high six saves en route to his first career shutout and New England’s first shutout of the young MLS season.
For the Revs the defensive effort was immense keeping the Dynamo off the board and controlling the physical style of play Houston brings to their games. In addition, their win can be described as a complete team effort with a balance of offensive and defense being key to their full 90 minutes effort.
This can be best described by defenseman Jalil Anibaba.
The starting lineup that Friedel brought to the table once again did not include Juan Agudelo who came off the bench to sub un for Bunbury in the 53rd minute and was once again not rewarded the opportunity to get his 100th MLS start but with the current starting group clicking it might take someone faltering for Agudelo to get back in the starting group.
For the Revs as a whole winning in Houston is huge since in the last two seasons the club only had three road wins and getting one this early in the season means it could no longer be an issue or a topic of discussion both in the fanbase and elsewhere in MLS.
New England returns to action next Friday, April 6, when the club hosts the Montreal Impact at Gillette Stadium for the first of three meetings this season. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and I will be live from Gillette with all the game coverage.
